Iran has admitted that it will limit its nuclear program and reduce uranium enrichment levels if the United States lifts sanctions.

Majid Takht-Ravanchi, the deputy foreign minister, said the Islamic Republic will slow down its nuclear program in exchange for economic relief from Donald Trump.

But he ruled out a complete ban on enrichment and did not specify how much the cut Iran would make.

"Iran can be flexible in its enrichment capacities and limits, but it cannot agree to stop enrichment under any circumstances because it is essential and we must rely on ourselves, not empty promises."

A complete halt to uranium enrichment was "out of the question", Takht-Ravanchi said.

Despite rising tensions, the deputy foreign minister said diplomatic channels with the US remained open through intermediaries.

He said Iran was "ready for dialogue with the United States" but warned that new American threats "would face strong defense."

Iran enriches uranium to 60% purity, close to approximately 90% needed for nuclear weapons.
