The case of an unprovoked stabbing attack on public transportation, in which a Ukrainian woman fleeing war in her native country lost her life, has sparked heated reactions and discussions about crime in America.

23-year-old Iryna Zarutska fled Kiev and settled in Charlotte, where she was attacked with a knife on a train on August 22. Surveillance footage from public transportation shows the girl boarding the train, wearing the uniform of the pizzeria where she worked, and sitting in front of the suspect, 34-year-old Decarlos Brown Jr.

Brown, a homeless man with a long history of mental health issues, arrests and convictions, appears agitated and nervous in the video. Five minutes after the train departs, he pulls out a folding knife, stands up and stabs Zarutska three times in the neck. She collapses in her seat and dies at the scene.

Further footage shows the killer wandering through the carriage, removing his bloody hoodie and exiting the train. The knife was later found not far from the platform.

Numerous right-wing commentators in America have accused the national media of deliberately covering up the issue.

"If Iryna had been black and the killer white, the media would have been talking about this day and night," wrote conservative podcaster Benny Johnson, who is close to President Donald Trump.

Local media reported the case in detail, but Twitter users pointed out that the New York Times, Washington Post, BBC and other major media outlets did not publish a single word. Among those who shared these claims was Elon Musk. Some have compared the case to the killing of George Floyd, a black man killed by a police officer in Minneapolis, which sparked the Black Lives Matter protests.
