Tesla owner Elon Musk has become the first person to reach a net worth of more than $500 billion (£370.9 billion), as the value of his electric car company and other businesses has soared this year.

The tech mogul's net worth briefly reached $500.1 billion on Wednesday afternoon local New York time before falling to $499 billion later in the day, the Forbes billionaires index reported.

Besides Tesla, the valuations of his other ventures, including artificial intelligence startup xAI and rocket company SpaceX, have also reportedly risen in recent months.

This historic milestone further reinforces Musk's status as the richest person in the world, far ahead of rivals in the global technology sector.

According to the Forbes billionaires index, Oracle founder Larry Ellison is the second richest person in the world, with a fortune of around $350.7 billion.

Ellison briefly surpassed Musk last month after Oracle shares rose more than 40%.

Musk's vast fortune is closely tied to his more than 12% stake in Tesla, whose shares have surged this year.

The company's shares have risen in recent months, as investors welcome the fact that Musk is focusing more time on his companies than on politics.
