Donald Trump reveals who the US is negotiating with, from Iran

US President Donald Trump has confirmed that the United States is negotiating with the speaker of Iran's parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, as the main figure in the Iranian regime with whom Washington has been communicating in recent weeks.

In an interview with the New York Post, Trump said that within "about a week" it will be known whether Ghalibaf is someone the US can really work with.

He added that he will reveal the result soon, as he is testing the possibility of an agreement to end the current tensions.

Trump has been cautious in the past and has not publicly named Ghalibaf, joking that anyone he mentioned openly could "end up getting killed."

However, he has now directly confirmed that talks are taking place with the speaker of parliament.

Ghalibaf has close ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), has served as police commander and mayor of Tehran, and has often been seen in military uniform.

He has publicly denied any negotiations with the US, calling the claims “fake news” to manipulate markets. But US sources have dismissed the denials as internal positioning.
