An unusual wedding in Mugello, in the Florence area, has been stopped after suspicions were raised during the marriage procedures between an 86-year-old Italian man and an Albanian woman, 35 years his junior.

According to the Italian media outlet La Nazione, the 86-year-old had recently been widowed and had expressed to his family his desire to marry the 51-year-old Albanian.

The couple had presented themselves to the civil registry office in April to begin the procedures. However, during the verifications, the civil registry officer noticed several elements that raised questions about the elderly man's condition and his ability to fully understand the decision he was making.

According to Italian reports, the 86-year-old appeared confused and unable to clearly explain the reasons for the marriage. Suspicions were also raised after it was discovered that he had given his wife considerable sums of money.

A document from the marriage procedure also attracted special attention. In it, the community of property regime was chosen, while the signature placed on the document did not match another signature of the 86-year-old, previously presented to the civil registry officer. When asked about this, the elderly man denied that the signature was his.

The investigation also raised questions about his knowledge of his real estate holdings. According to Italian media, he did not appear to have a clear picture of the properties he owned.

In these circumstances, the marriage procedure was suspended and the Court of Florence intervened. The prosecutor's office has opened an investigation for "circumvention of incapacitation", an offense related to taking advantage of the condition of an incapacitated or particularly vulnerable person. The 86-year-old is considered the injured party in this investigation. The Italian authorities are verifying whether his decisions were taken freely and consciously or whether he was influenced or benefited by his condition./ La Nazione
