Social network TikTok has been fined 345 million euros for violating European Union law on personal data on children's accounts, including failing to protect the content of underage users from public view.

The Irish data watchdog, which regulates TikTok across the EU, said the Chinese-owned app had committed multiple breaches of the General Data Protection Regulation.

The finding found that TikTok violated data protection by setting child user accounts to a "public" setting, failing to provide transparent information to child users, allowing an adult to access a child's account in the "family connection" by enabling direct messaging for over 16s, and not properly considering the risks to under 13s on the platform, who were set up in a public setting.

The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) said users aged 13 to 17 were led through the registration process in a way that resulted in their accounts being made public, meaning anyone could see the content of a account or comment on it.

The commission also found that the "family link" option, which gives an adult control over a child's account settings, did not check whether the said adult and the child user were a parent or guardian.
