The UN General Assembly will vote today on an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, days after the US vetoed a similar resolution proposed in the Security Council.
The current proposed draft was submitted by a group of 20 Arab countries and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
No country has veto power in the 193-member General Assembly. However, unlike the Security Council, General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding, although they reflect global opinion.
Since the start of the war, the Security Council has failed six times to pass a resolution calling for a ceasefire because of disagreements among its 15 members.
