Envoys from the United States and Iran are in Islamabad , Pakistan, where they are expected to hold peace talks later today.

Contrary to earlier reports, negotiations will begin on Saturday afternoon.

The American delegation is led by Vice President JD Vance , accompanied by special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

Meanwhile, the Iranian delegation, led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf , arrived on Friday evening. He stated that Iran has "good will but no faith" in the process.

Both delegations were received by Pakistan's Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, and the head of the armed forces, Asim Munir.

Pakistan is playing the role of the main mediator between the parties and has previously helped achieve a fragile two-week ceasefire.

According to Iranian media, the talks are expected to last a day, and sensitive issues such as the full opening of the Strait of Hormuz, Iran's nuclear program, the development of ballistic missiles, international sanctions, and the issue of frozen assets will be discussed at the table.

Meanwhile, reports of the release of Iranian assets by the US have been denied by Washington.

The situation in the region remains tense, as clashes between Israel and armed groups in Lebanon continue. Hezbollah has launched rocket and drone attacks, while the Israeli military has struck targets in southern Lebanon.

Diplomatically, China is pressuring Iran to stay at the negotiating table. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has said the US does not need an alternative plan, highlighting the weakening of Iran's military capabilities.

The success of these talks will depend on the possibility of extending the ceasefire beyond the initial two-week deadline, at a time when tensions in the region remain high.
