The administration of US President Donald Trump is considering a plan to move US troops closer to Russia, in a move that deepens rifts with NATO allies, the Wall Street Journal reports.

According to the report, the plan envisages the withdrawal of troops from NATO countries considered "disloyal" during the war with Iran and their relocation to countries that supported American operations.

Although it is not a question of a complete withdrawal from NATO (as this requires approval from Congress), the initiative points to a growing rift between Washington and its European allies.

According to administration officials, the closure of a US military base in Europe, likely in Spain or Germany, could also be considered.

Places that may be affected

Spain – did not commit to defense spending at the level of 5% of GDP and blocked the use of airspace for US aircraft during the operation against Iran

Germany – senior officials criticized the war, despite its important role in operations in the Middle East

Italy – temporarily blocked the use of an air base in Sicily

France – allowed the use of a base only under certain conditions

Countries that can benefit

According to the report, potential beneficiaries are:

Poland

Romania

Lithuania

Greece

These countries have among the highest levels of defense spending and have supported international initiatives, including patrolling the Strait of Hormuz. Romania, in particular, quickly allowed the use of air bases by US forces.

The move of troops closer to the Russian border is expected to increase tensions with Russia.

White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said it was "disappointing" that NATO did not support the United States in recent weeks, despite the US's financial role in defending the alliance.

Trump himself has expressed deep disappointment with the alliance, calling the lack of support a stain that "will never go away."

The US president has repeatedly criticized NATO, calling it a "paper tiger" and accusing partners of lacking courage. He has warned that he is seriously considering withdrawing the United States from the alliance.

In response, French President Emmanuel Macron has urged Trump to be more restrained in his statements, stressing that such rhetoric calls into question the US's commitment to NATO.
