Volcanic ash emitted from Mount Etna has caused the complete suspension of air traffic at Catania airport, Italy.

The SAC company, which manages Catania-Fontanarossa airport, announced that due to the intense emission of volcanic ash into the atmosphere and the direction of the winds, which are pushing the ash towards the air corridors, it has been decided to extend the closure of the C1 airspace sector.

As a result, all arriving and departing flights will remain suspended throughout Sunday, September 27, at least until 11:59 p.m. local time.

Airport authorities have urged passengers not to show up at the terminal without first contacting their airline to verify flight status or obtain information on the possibility of rescheduling.
