President Ilir Meta has threatened to file a lawsuit in Austria against the Kronen Zeitung for the article, which the newspaper describes as "fundamentally corrupt" and raises suspicions that he lobbied in Washington through a shell company paying 700 thousand dollars.
More than hope to win this trial, Meta's threat is made for internal political consumption, similar to Sali Berisha's lawsuit against Antony Blinken in Paris. Compared to the beginning when he announced the lawsuit, Berisha's optimism for victory has faded and at a recent press conference, he almost admitted that it was a losing battle.
The Austrian newspaper article did not come out of nowhere. The data is stored on the US Department of Justice FARA and can be easily accessed online on its official website.
In addition, the SMI statements themselves in the years when the Austrian newspaper article in question 'confirm' the content of that article. In the 2017 financial report on the official website of the CEC, this party does not declare as a consulting expense even the first agreement with McKeon company worth 15 thousand dollars for lobbying.
The figure is then reflected in an audit report of the Central Election Commission, which converting into lek says that the total amount spent for consultancy by the SMI is 48 million lek, including the 19 million old lek of lobbying with McKeon. In the same report, the CEC says that even this amount is not justified by the financial documentation according to the legislation in force.
The SMI has justified the amount as membership and business donations, presenting a list of donors. The CEC says that it has violated the Electoral Code by accepting donations in 6 bank accounts opened in three banks and not in a single special account as required by law and declared to the CEC.
Meanwhile, suspicions have been cast by the Austrian newspaper that Ilir Meta is still behind the lobbying through the shell company "Dorelita Limited". According to the documentation reflected by the McKeon lobbying office to the American authorities, 'Dorelita Limited' paid him with about 650 thousand dollars with a contract signed after the cancellation of the contract that McKeon had with the SMI.
The signatory of the contract in both cases is the Greek-American controversial lawyer and lobbyist, Iraklis Fidetzis. With the signing of the contract, McKeon Group has started lobbying meetings, officially for Dorelita, but unofficially there are strong doubts that the lobbying was done on behalf of Ilir Meta. From April 11 to April 28, a day before Ilir Meta was elected President of the Assembly with 87 votes in favor, McKeon Group declares that it has made at least 28 contacts in the Senate, Congress and with "Homeland Security" to introduce clients own, standing behind the company "Dorelita Limited".
The investigation raises suspicions that Iraklis Fidetzis is unlikely to have financed the $ 600,000 lobbying campaign of Dorelita Limited, but acted on behalf of another party. The question that remains unanswered and should be investigated by the Albanian justice is who financed the SMI lobbying to the offshore company "Dorelita Limited" and what was the objective behind this campaign of influence?
