Albanian violinist Beng Bakalli has been sentenced to 3 years in prison in France, 1 year on probation, and a 1.1 million euro fine for cocaine trafficking.
The Nice Criminal Court handed down the verdict on October 9 for the father of four. The fine corresponds to the value of the 38.3 kilograms of cocaine seized during his arrest in August this year. The prosecution had requested six years in prison.
The violinist, who was a part-time member of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Symphony Orchestra, was stopped near the Franco-Italian border on August 10.
Customs officers checked a Citroën C5 Aircross vehicle, driven by Bakalli, at the toll booth in La Turbie, on the A8 motorway, in the Alpes-Maritimes department.
Under the car's floor mat, they discovered a large quantity of drugs, specifically 38.33 kilograms of cocaine, with a value that, if sold on the market, would exceed one million euros.
But that wasn't all. While the musician was in custody in Nice, investigators searched his apartment in Besançon, where they found 90,000 euros, as well as four category B and C firearms and a large amount of ammunition.
Regarding the large amount of cash, the suspect stated that it was a gift from his father, Hassan Bakalli, also a violinist. As for the weapons and ammunition, he explained that he was involved in sports shooting.
Earlier, Bakalli, who does not appear to have a criminal record, said that he had secured the contract through some acquaintances during a trip to Albania, for a payment of 20,000 euros.
"I can't explain how I ended up in this situation," he stated during questioning.
Beng Bakalli, 45, born in Albania and based in France since 1991, is a professional violinist. He studied at several conservatories in France, in Lyon, Dijon and Besançon, and is a part-time member of the Victor-Hugo Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Symphony Orchestra (OVH).
At the time of the events, the orchestra's leaders had emphasized that "the arrest did not occur during his engagements with OVH" and that "of the 71 musicians who make up the orchestra, 30 are permanent members, while the other 41 work on temporary engagements. He falls into the second category."
For its part, the Municipality of Besançon declared at the time that it was "the action of a single individual, who should not be confused with the Victor Hugo Orchestra."
