Seventeen people, including three children, were killed in a Russian attack on the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhia on Saturday, a day after US President Donald Trump announced a deal to lift sanctions on Russian oil, in a major setback for Kiev.

A 6-year-old girl was among those killed when a blast destroyed part of a building in ruins.

Her grandfather, Anatoliy Chumniy, stood crying over her body, lying on the ground in a white bag, after rescuers pulled her from the rubble.

"She was going to celebrate her birthday at the end of the month," he said through tears.

Eighteen others were injured in the attack on the industrial city, whose outskirts are located less than 30 km from the front line.

"Today, Russia thanked for the lifting of sanctions on oil exports by dropping five glide bombs on residential buildings in Zaporizhzhia," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said, in one of his harshest criticisms yet of the White House.

This was the third mass casualty attack in Ukraine this week.

Nearly 80 civilians were killed in Russian airstrikes on Wednesday and Thursday, including at least 30 killed by a bomb in the eastern city of Kramatorsk and 22 others by a rocket in the town of Pryluky, 80 miles east of Kiev.
