Border Collie

It is not just a herding dog, but an irreplaceable companion. At British auctions, the best Border Collies can be sold for more than 10 thousand euros, while in rare cases the price can reach 30 thousand euros.

The reason? Their exceptional herd management skills and the economic value they can create on a farm.

In Skipton, a town in North Yorkshire, England, farmers and livestock breeders from all over the world gather, physically or online, to buy one of the most important farm tools: the sheepdog.

Skipton has for years been one of the most popular centers for the sale of Border Collies, a breed widely considered among the most capable for this type of work.

A "four-legged employee"

Quality comes at a price, and Border Collies are no exception. The world record is held by Kim, a puppy of this breed sold in Wales in 2021 for a whopping 32,500 euros, including auction commissions.

However, even outside of record cases, prices are high. A puppy that has not yet been trained for work can cost 500-1,000 euros, while for specimens with special potential, the amounts increase significantly.

At an auction in Skipton in March 2026, some puppies fetched up to €5,200. Dogs that have already started working with the pack usually cost around €2,500-3,000, but the price can easily exceed €10,000.

In June 2026, a trained puppy named Sue was sold for around €14,200. At the same auction, registered males had an average price of over €4,500, while females were around €6,500.

For exceptional dogs, especially those capable of managing large or complex flocks, prices can reach 20 thousand or even 30 thousand euros.

Why does it cost so much?

The answer lies in the value the dog creates for the farmer. A study by the University of Sydney calculated that a well-trained working dog can bring an economic return more than five times its cost.

The Border Collie is not limited to herding and herding the herd. He can separate animals that need to be milked or handled, keep them away from gates and feeders, and lead large herds of cattle.

Voice and whistle commands can be implemented remotely, often without the farmer having to move. The price also includes years of training and genetic selection.

A puppy must gradually develop into a reliable dog, capable of working under stress and around large animals. So the farmer is not simply buying an animal, but a working skill that can be difficult to replace.

An international market

The Border Collie market is now global. Skipton remains one of the main centres, but important auctions are also held in Wales and other parts of the UK.

At the Dolgellau auction, a 14-month-old female named Dot sold for €19,000, while another dog fetched €14,700. The online auctions, organised by Harrison & Hetherington, attract buyers from Britain, Ireland, Europe and the United States.

The main auctions are attended by farmers, breeders and trainers from Japan, the USA, Canada, Germany, Belgium, Italy and Australia. The dogs are bought for farm work, breeding or herding competitions.

A Border Collie trained in Wales could end up on a farm in Texas, while another from Yorkshire could start a new life in Japan.

This global demand, supported by the reputation of British dogs, keeps prices high and has turned this breed into both a loyal friend and one of the most valuable farm tools.
