24 hour water for Tirana? The new network project alone requires 3 million euros

Achieving the objective of 24-hour water supply for Tirana requires in-depth infrastructure improvement to respond to the demographic developments that the capital has received and continues to receive.

The Water and Sewerage Society in Tirana is recently looking for a company that will draw up a "Design Study on the water network of the City of Tirana in Units 1,2,3,4,5 and the Regional Director" and that will basically have the capital of the next 25 years, according to a master plan drawn up earlier.

Referring to the documents that accompany the procedure that has a limit fund of 310 million lek, or about 3 million euros, it is underlined that the basis for the design will be the mid-term study of the Technical and Strategic Development of the Master Plan of the Tirana Water-Sewage Company UKT sh.a.

"The basis of the service structure presented and recommended below is a high-pressure city network, including a new large-diameter pipeline of 41 km length and existing renovated pipelines of 10 km length," the document states. UKT.

It also summarizes how as part of a 25-year strategy the company plans to expand its production capacity in order to finally abandon those of its wells that are considered dangerous.

“According to our calculations, however, the planned investments barely provide enough water for 24-hour operation with the wells in question kept in operation. Capacity reserves should be set in such a way that even in a summer period with high consumption, a reserve of 15-20% should remain.

If this reserve volume is reduced, the reserve capacity to be built must be able to cover the demand for water in peak hours," the document states.

In order to come to conclusions about the most suitable models and investments for the capital UKT underlines that simulations have also been carried out.

"After simulating the 72-hour models, we suggest building 2 tanks with a capacity of 15,000 m3 and one tank with a capacity of 2,000 m3.

The demand for these reservoirs will not appear immediately, however, with the introduction of 24-hour water supply and the elimination of existing reservoirs with a total capacity of approximately 90,000 m3 in the long term, their construction will become inevitable.

Simultaneously with the construction of the transmission network, 2 reservoirs with a capacity of 7,500 m3 each are suggested in the Partitar area, which will first be necessary to ensure the proper functioning of the system. "The current status of the model suggests that the 400 m3 capacity of the Brigade tank is insufficient and will need to be extended by at least an additional 600 m3 in the future," the document states.

Finding a suitable solution for uninterrupted water supply foresees to eliminate in this form the placement of deposits which are a measure used by citizens to ensure water at all times.

"Most of the city currently has intermittent water supply. Customers compensate for this operational schedule by installing their own tanks and variable speed pumps in their domestic system.

Since it is not guaranteed that the pipes will be under pressure all the time, the risk of deterioration of the water quality and the risk of contamination is very high" UKT admits.
