Banks slowed down loans

New credit slowed during March. The data of the Bank of Albania show that about 28 billion ALL were given, almost 150 million ALL less than a year ago.

Meanwhile, in the first three months of the year, the decline is even more significant with almost 2 billion less disbursed to individuals and corporations.

The main cause of the slowdown in new credit is the increase in interest rates by the Bank of Albania, but also the uncertainty of the financial situation.

Meanwhile, focusing on the main groups that have received loans, it is noted that businesses have suffered a significant decrease with almost 4 billion less received in 2023, which has been compensated by 3 billion received by public corporations.

In the case of businesses, it is noticed that the loan was taken mostly for the purchase of equipment and overdraft, and less for working capital.

As for individuals, the new loan increased by ALL 400 million in March. The increase has all come from taking foreign currency loans to buy real estate. Loans in euros continue to have more favorable interest rates than those in lek. This is also a factor affecting the devaluation of the euro, while the statistics of monetary aggregates show that the lek in circulation has decreased.

Also, the indicator of non-performing loans suffered a slowdown in March after a slight increase at the beginning of the year. The ratio reached 5.15% from 5.16% a month ago, while since the end of last year it has increased by only 0.15%./ TCH
