Failure that will not be allowed

Every one who ends up in prison is not a failure of a person, but a failure of the whole society.

I am dealing with the restoration of a medieval wooden device. I'm not telling you what it is, that you will take me for more than you took me. I am doing this work these days when I have a little more free time and I go to a carpenter, an honest man and a good worker, who practices his trade somewhere in the cheap suburbs of Tirana.

Late one afternoon, he invites me to take a brandy with him to the club next door. We sit down and meanwhile a neighbor of his comes and after a few minutes discovers my problem. Hall property with the land in the remote village where he comes from. As I explain what he should do, we continue the free conversation.

It is from the North (coincidentally, it could just as well be from the South). He has close to 50 years on his shoulders; he built the house where he lives with his own hands; he has a wife, mother and two small children. He fled to Greece when he was 16 years old in '92, where he did not work in Europe; now for several years it has found a home in the Netherlands. Hard working hands, honest and dedicated family man. He works there for a few months, makes some money and returns to Albania. He finishes a wall, pays some debt, takes care of the house and the land in the village in the North, and then again leaves his mother, wife and children and returns to work in Holland.

- What do you do there? - I ask him.
-Shpi the shepherd - he answers me. Without batting an eyelash. With a disarming naturalness and childlike naivety.

I get the point right away. He does not know that this is a morally reprehensible thing. I only know that this is a forbidden thing and I don't even think about why it is forbidden, because the big ones decided it like that, maybe you think. But I don't know that it is legally prohibited, because it is morally reprehensible. Because drugs encourage illegal enrichment, corruption, increase criminality, degeneration and degradation of young people, add to the lives lost. This he does not know, no one has ever told him. The younger mother and father did not teach him; neither the books nor the teachers ever taught it at school; neither the media nor the newspapers conveyed it; neither the deputy nor the mayor explained it to him when they asked for his vote; not even the priest or hoxha of the village where he comes from told him.

I finally heard from the Italian judge what I have been thinking and saying for a long time. In fact, neither I nor the judge invented anything unsaid. With his, Christ said 2000 years ago: "Who is without sin, let him cast the first stone"!

End of story.

Respect for that judge who did not fall short with "I did my duty when I sentenced him".

Respect for this family worker from the outskirts of Tirana, who is bad without knowing that he is.

As for me, I will do everything possible so that, when I meet him again, I will try to make him understand that drugs are not only forbidden, they are also bad. God help me in this matter. May God help every good Albanian who tries to bring someone back to the path of morality, before rejoicing over another's prison while eating seeds on the porch.
