Veliaj wins trial against Italian who slandered him over incinerator issue

Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj has won the court case against Italian citizen Gabriele Tarroni Longinotti, dismissing the accusations that had sparked a wave of investigations and public debate in the country over the so-called incinerator issue.

At the conclusion of the trial, held at the Criminal Chamber of the Tirana General Jurisdiction Court, it was concluded that all previous allegations made by Italian citizen Gabriele Tarroni Longinotti against Veliaj are untrue. The Italian citizen himself admitted during the trial that he had no meeting, communication or relationship with the mayor, either in Albania or in Italy.

Longinotti also admits that statements made in the media, including television interviews, were motivated by promises of financial gain, raising serious doubts about the credibility of the sources that prompted the initial investigation.

The court's decision is considered an important development, as it overturns the basis of the accusations that led to a long process of verifications and public pressure against Veliaj and his family over the incinerator issue, and was used as an alibi by opponents for the development of violent opposition protests in front of Tirana City Hall for a period of over a year.

Reactions following the decision have been numerous, while Veliaj's supporters consider this a return to the truth and a blow to what they describe as "fabrication of accusations" with political and media motives.

After accepting the defamation and apologizing from Mr. Longinotti, Veliaj's lawyers did not seek further punishment, contenting themselves with uncovering the truth. "Our client's goal is the truth, not the punishment of people used for political warfare. This goal was achieved with the admission of guilt by the accused for defamation."

Veliaj himself has stated that he will continue the legal battle to protect his integrity and to highlight those responsible for the damage caused, emphasizing that the case should serve as a lesson about the responsibility that public statements carry.

The case is also expected to have an impact on the political and institutional climate in the country, reopening the debate on the role of the media, anonymous sources, and investigative standards in Albania.
