This morning, the master of Albanian literature, Ismail Kadare, passed away, leaving behind a monumental work.

Foreign media have written about the death of the Nobel Prize candidate, comparing him to Franz Kafka or George Orwell.

Le monde writes that Kadare used metaphor and irony to reveal the nature of tyranny under Enver Hoxha, who ruled Albania from 1946 until his death in 1985.

Meanwhile, the Associated Press dwells on Kadare's candidacy for years for the "Nobel.

"His allegorical stories, which reported on life under state communism, attracted international acclaim, but he insisted that he was not a political writer," writes The Guardian.

France 24 remembers some of the writer's interviews, where he talked about communism, among other things.

"The hell of communism, like any other hell, was suffocating in the worst sense of the term," Kadare told AFP in one of his last interviews in October.

"But literature transformed it into a life force, a force that helps you survive and keep your head up and win over the dictatorship. This is the reason why I am so grateful to literature, because it gives me the opportunity to overcome the impossible", said the writer.
