An Albanian drug gang has been destroyed by the Federal Judicial Police.
A 'criminal intermediary' from Berchem (Antwerp) acted as an intermediary between groups in Albania and Latin America.
He was also in contact with an Albanian murder suspect in Italy, 'The General.' Eight suspects have been arrested, four of whom have been detained.
The investigation began almost a year ago, when police discovered that large quantities of cocaine were suspected to be stored in an apartment in Berchem. During the subsequent investigation, a 48-year-old man came to the fore as the resident.
He is believed to be an intermediary in contact with groups from Albania and Latin America for the importation of cocaine, including through the port of Antwerp, and with smuggling groups from Europe and even Australia.
"The man in his forties is suspected of coordinating the various groups responsible for the shipment, recovery and distribution of the drugs. He is said to have offered various methods for smuggling the drugs, could have sought the help of, for example, security guards and directed the couriers," said Antwerp Public Prosecutor's Office Spokesperson Kristof Aerts.
Earlier this year, police managed to seize two shipments of cocaine weighing 46 and 53 kilograms.
Suspected of murder
In June, it emerged that the main suspect was in contact with a 52-year-old Albanian man who was internationally wanted for a murder in Italy in 1997.
The Federal Police's Fugitive Active Search Team (FAST) managed to arrest the man. His extradition to Italy is still ongoing.
We are talking about the infamous Albanian Gert Gjinarari, otherwise known as 'The General'.
In 1997, he shot a rival in a Milan hospital with a pistol hidden among a bouquet of flowers. Almost thirty years later, now 52, he has been arrested again, this time in Antwerp.
On Wednesday, house searches were carried out in Antwerp, Berchem, Deurne, Kapellen, Brussels, Evere, Sint-Agatha-Berchem and Sint-Joost-ten-Node.
Eight people were arrested, including the so-called middleman, as well as people he allegedly worked closely with.
During the raids, police found, among other things, firearms and various ammunition in hidden compartments, bulletproof vests, jammers, cash, a money counting machine, forged passports and press cards, press machines and molds for making cocaine blocks.
The investigating judge then brought six suspects before the court. Of these, four people were detained, one person was released on bail, and one person was allowed to leave.
The judicial investigation by the Antwerp Federal Police, under the direction of the investigating judge, is ongoing.
Europol
As part of the investigation, close cooperation was maintained with other countries and Europol.
This could result in arrests abroad.
