The Hamburg High Court has sentenced one of Europe's most notorious drug lords, Princ Dobroshi, a Kosovo Albanian known for decades in the criminal world as "The Shark" (in German, "Hai").
The German newspaper Bild reports that the 61-year-old was found guilty on September 17. The trial dealt with an incredible amount of drugs: ten tons of cocaine, which in 2020 were smuggled by ship from South and Central America through the port of Hamburg, all essentially organized by Dobroshi.
In the "drug business" for more than 30 years
Prince Dobroshi began his career as a drug smuggler in the 1990s.
He was arrested in Norway in 1993, managed to escape from prison in 1997, was recaptured in Prague in 1999, and was released in 2005.
Now, the court has found that he once again played a key role in organized crime. The cocaine was shipped from Colombia, Brazil or the Dominican Republic, hidden in containers among bananas, rice, charcoal or gelatin, and transported across the Atlantic.

In Hamburg, the containers were opened, the drugs were removed, and then sealed again with forged seals. Dobroshi was always informed through conversations on the Encrochat app, and organized the transport and receipt of the goods. Port employees were also reportedly involved. His network covered all logistics, up to the distribution of millions of euros.
The EncroChat app cost him his freedom
The crucial lead to Dobroshi came from the decryption of the encrypted application EncroChat. Dobroshi was arrested in late 2023 in Albania and extradited to Germany in 2024.
Initially, he remained silent, but then admitted his guilt, which led to a reduction in his sentence.
“The trial was actually scheduled to last until April 1, 2026. But thanks to the confession, 42 court hearings were saved,” Dr. Marayke Frantzen, a court spokeswoman, told the BILD newspaper.
However, the fact that Dobroshi had a leading role in the gang and the large amount of drugs that were trafficked influenced the harsher sentence.
Germany demands millions from Prince Dobroshi
In addition to the prison sentence, the state is also seeking the confiscation of the Albanian's assets. The court has ordered the seizure of 8.2 million euros as compensation from Dobroshi.
2.5 million euros in cash were seized in 2020. Now, the prosecution must figure out how to recover the rest of the amount. The decision is now final.
