The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports has reacted to the public statements of athlete David Nikolli, who a day ago said that he was fired after the protest that took place yesterday on Dëshmorët e Kombit Boulevard.
In a post on social media, the ministry calls these claims unfounded and untrue and emphasizes that Nikolli has never been employed in the state administration or any public institution in Albania.
The reaction also states that the athlete has been living and practicing his professional activity in Italy for years, while he has received financial support from the Albanian state as part of his high-level athlete status during the years 2024-2026.
The Ministry clarifies that the Partizani Sports Club has not expelled the athlete, but has offered him the opportunity to continue cooperation through a new contract.
The institution also emphasizes that from the verifications so far, it does not appear that the athlete is part of the national anti-doping registration system or has documented the relevant controls according to legal procedures.
The Ministry reiterates its commitment to the equal treatment of athletes and calls for the public debate to be based on facts, official documentation and legal procedures.

Clarification of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports regarding the public statements of athlete David Nikolli
Regarding the public statements of athlete David Nikolli, the Ministry responsible for sports clarifies that the claims made by him are unfounded.
David Nikolli has not been and is not employed in any administrative organization or in any state entity or institution of the Republic of Albania. Consequently, the claim that he was removed from his “state job” is untrue and is not based on any fact or administrative act, and the insinuation about the protest is even more wrong in addition to being completely unfounded.
It is also a known fact that the athlete has been living and practicing his professional activity in Italy for years, without being employed in Albania. For this reason, the claims of dismissal from a state job in Albania are unfounded.
The financial documentation shows that the athlete has benefited from financial support within the framework of the status of a high-level athlete, including food treatment and sports awards during the period 2024–2026, in accordance with the legislation and by-laws in force.
It also turns out that the Partizani Sports Club has not excluded the athlete from sports activity, but has offered him the opportunity to continue cooperation within the new organizational structure of the club, through the conclusion of a contract as an athlete of the club. The athlete has been asked to submit an official request for review by the club's governing bodies, in order to continue the contractual relationship.
Regarding claims for other financial benefits, we emphasize that the applicable sports legislation and relevant bylaws provide not only rights, but also obligations for high-level athletes, including compliance with national and international anti-doping rules.
From the administrative verifications carried out up to this stage, it does not appear that the athlete is part of the national anti-doping registration system nor has he documented the performance of anti-doping controls according to the procedures provided for by the relevant regulatory framework. Consequently, any claim for additional benefits or rewards must be assessed in view of the full fulfillment of the criteria and obligations set out in the sports legislation in force.
The ministry responsible for sports remains committed to the implementation of sports legislation, the equal treatment of athletes and their support based on facts, official documentation and legal procedures in force.
We invite all stakeholders to base the public debate on verifiable facts and official documentation, in the interest of transparency, the integrity of sport, and the fair information of public opinion and respect for and responsibility towards it.
