Everyone against GJKKO - EU reacts: We are ready to offer our expertise

As of September 1, the new regulation of the Special Court of First Instance Against Corruption and Organized Crime (GJKKO) has entered into force, which provides for the removal of phones and cameras for journalists present at hearings.

The European Union Delegation to Albania has reacted to this situation, stating that it is closely monitoring the situation.

The EU Delegation is aware of the new internal regulation on security, order and rules of conduct in the premises of the GJKKO, which takes into account the specific organizational, operational and security characteristics related to this court and its judicial processes.

"The EU is ready to continue to provide specialized expertise to both the judicial system and the media community, in support of finding a fair balance between security measures and access to information and transparency of judicial processes, in accordance with European standards and principles," it said in a response to Top Channel.

The EU Delegation emphasizes that it will continue to closely monitor these issues in the context of Albania's accession negotiations with the European Union.

Meanwhile, the head of the National Chamber of Advocates, Maksim Haxhia, has announced that on Tuesday, at 12:00, an urgent meeting will be held in Tirana to discuss the restrictions that, according to lawyers, the new regulation foresees.

The media community has also been involved in the debate. “Safe Journalist” has publicly called for a review of the regulation, expressing concern that some of its provisions may undermine the work of journalists and the media in relation to judicial processes.

The new regulation has thus opened a debate on the balance between the needs for security in the premises of the GJKKO and guaranteeing access of lawyers, journalists and the public to information and judicial processes.
