The trial is postponed to September, Veliaj is assigned a lawyer!

Erion Veliaj and his wife, Ajola Xoxa, continue to use procedural mechanisms to delay the trial in the Special Court, where both are being tried on serious charges, such as corruption, money laundering, and concealment of assets.

At today's court session, the mayor of Tirana, who is facing 13 charges, was not present. Through a letter, he expressed his willingness to be represented by his lawyer, Plarent Ndreca.

The court announced that lawyer Ndreca had filed a request to postpone the hearing, arguing that he was involved in another process at the Tirana Court, Civil Chamber, where the defendant is Arbjan Mazniku.

"The lawyer emphasizes that he is objectively unable to participate in the court session," the court reported.

On the other hand, Gurali Brahimllari, Ajola Xoxa's lawyer, stated that his client was absent due to her health condition.

"In compliance with the court's decision, the client I defend, in her capacity as a patient, has consulted with the doctor who has been treating her. She continues in the same situation and finds it impossible to be present in this process in order to carry out effective defense," said Brahimllari.

SPAK prosecutor Ols Dado opposed the defense's requests, stating that "Veliaj's defense is becoming an obstacle to the hearing." He requested that the court appoint a defense attorney ex officio, impose a fine according to its assessment, and suspend the pre-trial detention terms.

Regarding Ajola Xoxa's medical report, the prosecutor emphasized that the court had already ruled on this issue.

"It's not about being unable to participate in the legal process. The operation does not prevent him from participating in the process," Dado said.

After withdrawing to the consultation room, the panel decided that the hearing would take place without Ajola Xoxa's presence, reasoning that the medical report did not prove her inability to participate in the process.

The court also decided to continue the session without Erion Veliaj's presence, while fined his lawyer, Plarent Ndreca, for his absence.

Also, a lawyer was appointed primarily for the mayor, Valentina Teodorescu, who has previously been part of this file and has defended him.

In conclusion, the court decided to postpone the next hearing to September 15th.
