The Albanian government has today given its approval in principle for the joint agreement with North Macedonia, which envisages the creation of joint border crossing points between the two countries.
"The approval, in principle, of the agreement between the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Albania and the government of the Republic of North Macedonia, for the establishment of joint border crossing points between the Republic of Albania and the Republic of North Macedonia and the conduct of joint border control activities," the government's announcement reads.
The initiative was announced two days ago by North Macedonia government spokeswoman Venera Azizi. According to her, the new system aims to facilitate the movement of citizens by offering faster, simpler and safer procedures, especially during the summer season when border traffic increases significantly.
The project will initially be implemented at the Qafë Thana border crossing, which will serve as a pilot phase. The model is then expected to be gradually applied to other border crossings connecting Albania with North Macedonia.
For the full functioning of the system, the final agreement remains to be formalized through signing by the Ministries of Interior of both countries.
