Panic in Belsh/ A 10-meter-deep karst hole appears near homes

A karst sinkhole with a diameter of about 7 meters and a depth of more than 10 meters has appeared for several days very close to homes in the hospital neighborhood in the city of Belsh.

The natural phenomenon is common in the Dumre area, which has over 84 lakes created as a result of karst phenomena.

The phenomenon has sparked panic among residents who feel unsafe as the sinkhole approaches their homes day by day and are seeking intervention from emergency services.

At 360 km2, the Dumre area is karst as a result of the melting of gypsum and limestone rocks.

It seems that the phenomenon is becoming more frequent as in June of this year a similar pit was opened in the village of Dëshiran, while in May 2022 a pit was opened near houses in the village of Cestije in Belsh.

The rainy weather makes the situation even more worrying for nearby residents.
