The head of the Albanian Interreligious Conference, Dom Gjergj Meta, has reacted to the passing of Pope Francis.

The Pope passed away this Monday morning at around 7:35 a.m. “We thank God for his service,” the Head of the Albanian Interreligious Conference wrote, among other things.

"Dear Catholic believers! Pope Francis has returned to the Father's house! He passed away today at 7:35 am! We thank God for his service in all these years and pray for his soul!" - writes Dom Gjergj Meta.

The Pope's death comes less than 24 hours after he appeared in the Vatican's St. Peter's Square for Easter Sunday.

He emerged in a wheelchair and waved from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica to the crowds of people and said: "Dear brothers and sisters, Happy Easter."

In recent years, Pope Francis had faced several health complications.

In 2021, he underwent surgery on his colon, while in 2023 he had another abdominal surgery to treat a hernia.

He also struggled with chronic knee and back pain, and often used a wheelchair.

Despite these complications, he had a busy schedule, and performed the duties of a pope, as well as traveling the world.

In early 2025, he was hospitalized due to a respiratory tract infection, which later resulted in double pneumonia.

His condition was serious, forcing him to stay in the hospital for days.
