A prison escape like in a movie – and it's not the first time for Taulant Toma, the convict who escaped from Opera prison. The incident occurred on the night between Saturday and Sunday, December 7, when he cut through the bars of his cell and got out using sheets tied together. He then disappeared without a trace.

According to preliminary investigations, the escape is suspected to have occurred during the guard shift change and was prepared down to the smallest detail, which explains the speed with which it was carried out. It is still not known how he managed to cross the high prison wall, nor whether he had the help of any collaborators outside.

Previous escapes

This is not his first escape. Taulant, convicted of theft and robbery (with a sentence that ends in 2041), managed to escape from Parma prison, another high-security institution, in February 2013. He then escaped together with fellow countryman Frokaj Vamenti, who was later killed by a jeweler during a robbery at a villa.

Taulant was arrested again in Belgium in September of that year. He was sent to Latina prison, near the city of Liège, but in December he escaped from there as well. Meanwhile, in 2009 he was also able to escape from Terni prison.

Search operation

The prefecture has launched a large-scale search operation. Roadblocks have been set up and rural and industrial areas are being searched. However, there are fears that Taulant may have already managed to leave the area.
