The Journalists' Association of Albania (AGSH) has reacted with deep concern and condemned the direct threat against journalist Osman Stafa.
According to the report filed with the Cybercrime Investigations Directorate of the State Police, the journalist received a threatening message on the social network Facebook, which read "remember, I will kill you" and "I guarantee this."
The threat is suspected to be related to a video released by Stafa during the September 8 protest near Parliament, which documented the actions of several people in civilian clothes during the detention of a protester.
AGSH assesses that such threats constitute a serious attack on the individual security of journalists, media freedom and the right of citizens to be informed.
Full reaction:
The Journalists' Association of Albania (AGSH) expresses deep concern and strongly condemns the serious threat to the life of News24 journalist Osman Stafa.
According to the report filed with the Cybercrime Investigations Directorate of the State Police, the journalist received a message on his Facebook account with directly threatening content, which, among other things, reads: "remember, I will kill you" and "I guarantee this."
According to the journalist's testimony, the threat is suspected to be related to a film he made and published during the September 8 protest near Parliament, where he documented the actions of several civilians during the detention and arrest of a protester.
AGSH assesses that death threats against a journalist, especially when related to the exercise of duty and the publication of materials of public interest, are unacceptable and constitute a serious attack not only on the journalist's individual security, but also on media freedom and the public's right to be informed.
We ask the State Police and the justice authorities to act urgently, to identify the person or persons behind the account from which the threat was sent, to investigate the motive and any possible connection to Osman Stafa's journalistic work, and to take all necessary measures to guarantee the journalist's safety.
AGSH will follow this case closely and expects the authorities to inform the public about the progress of the investigation. Threats against journalists should not be normalized nor should they remain unpunished. Every journalist should be able to document and report events of public interest without fear of being threatened with death.
