An Albanian was arrested on Monday around 6:30 PM while pouring nearly 1,000 liters of toxic mixture into a spring in Cahagnes, France.

According to  French media,  this deliberate act of pollution required the intervention of a specialized firefighting unit and led to the preventive closure of a drinking water station.

The suspect, an Albanian national in his thirties who worked at a construction site nearby, was caught emptying a tank from a truck into the stream, a tributary of the Drome River. According to French media, the tank contained hydrocarbons and anti-mold product for roofs.

The alarm was raised by an eyewitness, allowing the rapid intervention of the gendarmerie. Seventeen firefighters from four rescue centers were mobilized to set up absorbent barriers in order to isolate the layer of pollution in the water.

Mayor Guillaume Dujardin immediately closed the valves to protect the local water network. He expressed his indignation at the incident, which occurred near the Aubigny castle, as the municipality is trying to preserve aquatic fauna, especially amphibians.

"I quickly closed the valves when I saw the polluted water," explained Mayor Guillaume Dujardin.

The local official also clarified that the individual did not have the right to drive a vehicle on French territory and seemed surprised by the environmental consequences of his action.

"This individual, an Albanian in his thirties, did not have the right to drive a vehicle in the territory and worked at a construction site near the area. The water was iridescent and smelled of hydrocarbons, but he was surprised by the consequences," the mayor added.

The pumping station, located downstream and inaugurated only fifteen days ago, was closed for safety reasons.

Although there was no immediate impact on the water supply, the station will remain closed until further notice. The mayor of Cahagnes reiterated his desire for this act to be punished by the judicial authorities.

"We cannot tolerate such an action, especially when it is done intentionally," concluded Guillaume Dujardin.

The prosecution has dealt with the case and the Albanian will soon be required to appear before the courts to answer for this environmental criminal offense.
