The IBAR, the Interim Milestone Assessment Report for Albania, was not approved even at the last meeting held in Brussels between representatives of the European Commission and the European Union member states. The IBAR is one of the most important documents in the process of negotiations for membership in the European Union.

The report mainly relates to the two most sensitive chapters of Albania's negotiations with the EU, Chapters 23 and 24, which focus on the rule of law, the independence of the justice system, the fight against corruption and organized crime, and the respect for fundamental rights.

It seems that EU member states, by refusing to approve IBAR at Tuesday's meeting, are not convinced that the Albanian government has met the criteria or conditions set for moving forward with the negotiation process.

The adoption of the Interim Milestone Assessment Report would enable Albania to move towards closing the negotiation chapters, giving more confidence to the integration process.

Meanwhile, the lack of a vote on this document could slow down the process, the chapters will not be closed and the country will remain in a "waiting" period.

Meanwhile, other meetings are scheduled to take place on May 19 and 22.

The European integration process has caused debates and retorts between the majority and the opposition.

For the political majority, Albania has met the required criteria and consequently continues to firmly support the ambition to close all negotiation chapters by the end of 2027.

Meanwhile, the opposition emphasizes that the lack of approval of IBAR is due to the political protection that the socialist majority gave to Belinda Balluku, when it rejected SPAK's request for her arrest.
