They left him at the hospital door and never returned, the story of Durimi who has been living for two years with his leg amputated in the Përmet hospital.

For more than two years, the hospital has become his home. Durim Elmazi, a disabled person who has just received his pension, has been living in the Përmet Hospital since May 2024, after his family left him at the door of this institution and left. Amputated in one leg as a result of gangrene caused by diabetes, he has neither a home nor anyone to shelter him.

Durimi is from the village of Mokricë in Përmet. After his divorce and years of emigration to Greece, his health deteriorated to the point of amputation of his leg. In December 2023, his relatives brought him to Albania for treatment. After staying for several weeks in their apartments and spending time in hospitals in Përmet and Gjirokastra, he finally ended up in the Përmet Hospital, where he still lives today.

In a touching story for Report TV, Durimi reveals that he has been abandoned by his ex-wife and two daughters, who live with their families in Greece. Even though he does not need hospitalization, he continues to stay there because the hospital is the only roof over his head.

"I'm not alone at home because I have no one at home. I have no home or anyone. I broke up with my daughter-in-law. I have 2 children, I'm married in Greece. They know I'm here in the hospital. They can't take me. I don't want to stay on the third floor," he said.

The head nurse of the Përmet Hospital states that Durimi did not lack any care, be it medication or hygiene, but was also treated with food.

"Durimi has been coming here for 2 and a half years. He had problems with his leg. His family left him at the hospital door. He was admitted to the ward, treated and then he was left because no one would take him in," said Antoneta Gaqo, head nurse of the Përmet Hospital.

Regarding this very rare case where the hospital has been transformed into a place of shelter for a sick person, Report TV has contacted the Ministry of Health.

This ministry explains that Durim Elmazi has been in the Përmet Hospital since May 27, 2024 under the care of health structures, after a surgical intervention and in conditions of a difficult social and family situation.

During this period, the patient has been continuously provided with medical treatment, nursing care, assistance with personal hygiene and support during movement within the hospital premises. In parallel, local and regional social structures have been engaged to find a long-term solution.

In cooperation with the Municipality of Përmet, economic assistance, food support and payment of necessary pension contributions have been provided.

On August 11, 2026, the application for the pension connection was also completed. According to the Ministry of Health, Durim Elmaz's case is a health and social complex, which requires continuous coordination between health structures, social services and local government.
