Controversial British MP: Albania must take in criminals, otherwise we will block their visas and aid

Reform UK MP Sarah Pochin has called on the British government to issue an ultimatum to Albania to accept the return of its convicted citizens to the United Kingdom, proposing the blocking of visas and the termination of British aid in the event of refusal.

The statements were made on Talk TV, during a discussion on Nigel Farage's proposals for removing foreign prisoners from British prisons.

Pochin said that releasing prisoners after serving only part of their sentence is unacceptable and that a quick way to create prison places would be to remove the 10,700 foreign nationals currently in prison.

"The first option is, of course, to send them to their country of origin. We know that the majority come from Albania," she stated.

The Reform UK MP then proposed punitive measures against Albania if Tirana did not accept the return of its citizens.

"Why don't we tell the Albanian government: you will take them back. If you don't, you will not get any more British visas. You will not get any more aid from Britain. Take your criminals back. Why should we finance them here?" said Pochin.

According to her, if the countries of origin refuse to accept the convicts, they should be sent to a third country. During the interview, El Salvador and Kosovo were mentioned as possible destinations.

Pochin is the MP for Runcorn and Helsby and the first woman elected to the British Parliament under the Reform UK banner. She won the May 2025 by-election by just six votes over the Labour candidate.

Her statements have caused controversy before. In October 2025, Pochin apologized after complaining that advertisements in Britain were "full" of black and Asian people.

Former Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the comments "shocking racism", while Farage himself admitted that the way they were phrased was "wrong and ugly", but said her intention had not been racist.
