Aliaj's murder was not an ordinary quarrel between prisoners. The facts that came to light speak of a carefully planned act, of an execution that bears the marks of a death contract.
Jani Aliaj was killed inside a prison that is theoretically monitored 24 hours a day, where cameras, guards, and security protocols aim to prevent any incident.
He was known as a problematic figure, a name that carried dark histories and unresolved conflicts...
"What is noticeable about the character Jani Aliaj is that he betrays his friends and comrades from Tepelena, and joins the drug trafficking and fine-extortion gangs in the center of Athens. He initially joins the Fierak group, who under certain circumstances seem to create enemies there as well and leaves, joins a gang of thieves and robbers from Berat, also leaves with them and in the end becomes a member of a gang of extortionists with Greek command, but with its main exponent being people from northern Albania", said journalist Artur Bibe.
"What I know from my information is that the police are analyzing his entire history, to connect his murder with his history with the past, as there are different scenarios that are being analyzed by the police. They even say that it could be related to an organized crime group or to a past enmity," said journalist Mikaela Sava.
How was such an attack organized within a continuously monitored space? Was everything orchestrated from within the prison walls, or were there elements coming from outside? And most importantly, why, even after the initial investigations, do more questions remain than answers?
"This story cannot be separated if the murder occurred because of his criminal activity in Greece, or because of the conflicts he had in Albania, as both things are connected. I have the impression that the criminal activity built over the years by Jani Aliaj and his opponents in Greece, produced conflict in Albania and then things spilled over to Greece where he was imprisoned," said Xhevahi Zhabina, journalist.
"Jani Aliaj is a well-known exponent of the criminal world with many enemies. His saga has begun, his name has been known to the Greek authorities since the 2000s when Aliaj entered Greece, there was an infiltration by the Greek police, then he was involved in several minor criminal events," said Artur Bibe, journalist.
The "murder machinery" inside the prison that eliminated Jani Aliaj, the fake Greek author and Albanian 'killer'
Initially, a Greek citizen claimed responsibility for the murder of Jani Aliaj. A few hours before the event, it was reported that the 49-year-old was killed by Kristos Vardhuniotis, who had been arrested a few months earlier for the murder of Artur Bashimi.
The latter was executed with a bullet to the head in August 2025. The Greek perpetrator of that event confessed to the crime immediately after his arrest. He confessed that he did not know the victim beforehand, but that he had carried out the assassination in exchange for payment.
For reasons still unknown, the Greek citizen was taking responsibility for a crime he had not committed.
"In fact, the source told me that at first there were three people involved. That is, there was not much doubt about who was involved, what actually intrigued us was that the person who took responsibility was a person who had recently executed another Albanian," said Artur Bibe, a journalist.
"The Greek citizen, who had taken responsibility for this serious criminal event, had himself admitted the authorship of the crime, it turned out that he was not the author, but there are also other citizens and Albanian citizens who have actively participated in this criminal event," said Indrit Sefa, lawyer.
Further investigations identified the real perpetrator of the murder, citizen Xhuljano Halili.
He is a convicted felon known for extreme violence, suspected of previous murders, including several unrelated to the conflicts. Among his victims is a 2-year-old boy.
Author Halili was slightly injured during the fight with Aliaj, which initially led to suspicions that he was one of the victims of the incident. The forensic doctor's examinations showed that the wounds were sustained during the fight with the victim, revealing the truth behind the initial reports and media speculation.
"Xhuljano Halili, who initially stated that he had participated in the fight between Varvlotis and Aliaj to separate them, had received knife wounds. It is understood that the forensic doctor immediately examined both hands of the suspected perpetrator who had admitted authorship, but it seems that he was not the perpetrator and it resulted that Xhuljano Halili is the suspected perpetrator of the murder of Jani Aliaj", said journalist Artur Bibe.
According to information from the Greek media, it is suspected that the Greek prisoner may have been paid or threatened to take responsibility. These indications prompted the authorities to revise the initial version and deepen the investigation, trying to uncover every detail of an event that had shocked the penitentiary institutions of the neighboring country.
Aliaj, known in prison as "Xheku", had been involved in various investigations for years, being considered part of several criminal groups operating in Albania and the neighboring country.
"What I have understood and what I have spoken to various sources is that they are linking it to his past and to various enemies he may have had. Of course the focus is on Greece, but they are also looking at the crimes he committed in Albania," said journalist Mikaela Sava.
"Greece is considered one of the countries with the highest number of violent deaths in its prisons. There are many factors in this regard, even from the studies themselves, it is shown that one of the causes is the lack of conditions in prisons, they are poor conditions. The second factor is the lack of staff, the third factor is the corruption that may exist", said the lawyer, Gjergj Nikolla.
In the history of clashes related to Tepelena's criminal groups, history has often shown that borders are symbolic.
The main line of investigation of the Greek Prosecutor's Office for the elimination of Jani Aliaj remains the feuds with rival groups in Tepelena. To understand the war between these gangs, we will now fully dissect the criminal life of Aliaj and his rivals.
This event is considered the final chapter of a war that began years ago, a war that was not stopped by punishments, bars, or security protocols. A war that ended with the murder of the two main protagonists, Elton Çiço earlier, and Aliaj more recently.
"In my view, revenge is not a priority or the first cause that brings about these criminal events, but it is the need that every criminal group needs to "overlap another group. And until that other group is finally extinguished, they will not find peace, which means that criminal events will always continue..." said the lawyer, Indrit Sefa
"These two events were foreshadowed, I don't think there was any turning back, and I don't think it had any major impact on the groups' decision-making, it's just that the conflict between the two was known, and both sought each other's elimination," said journalist Xhevahir Zhabina.
