Accused of causing cancer, well-known company pulls powder from market

U.S. company Johnson & Johnson will suspend the worldwide sale of skin powder, starting next year.

The decision relates to many lawsuits the company faces, over 40,000, for the alleged link between product and ovaries cancer and mesothelioma.

Meanwhile, the company is switching to similar products based on corn for children, although the company has repeatedly reiterated its position that decades of independent research shows that the product is safe to use.

"As part of an assessment of the global portfolio, we have made the trade decision to switch to a full powdered talk portfolio based on corn starches" is said in a statement.

The company added that this product is already sold in countries around the world. At the same time, J&J reiterated that "the position for the powder it is pulling from the market remains unchanged".

In February, a New Jersey court upheld J&J's bankruptcy filing because of the need to handle lawsuits related to the powder. In 2018, a jury in Missouri convicted the company of paying $4.7 billion after 22 women accused J&J of using asbestos in this powder and baby products causing ovarian cancer.
