After 20 years, Albanians will no longer eat Brazilian meat.

This interruption of the trade relationship comes after the EU's decision to supply itself with products of animal origin from Brazil.

This conclusion came after the unanimous position held by experts from member states, due to the use of veterinary medications that increase the muscle mass of animals.

Top Channel has managed to obtain a follow-up letter, where the Ministry of Agriculture responds to the AKU on how it should act with traders who bring Brazilian meat to our country.

“Under these conditions, as long as Ministerial Order I.2006 conditions importation with EU approval of production areas and establishments, the changes brought by Commission Implementing Regulation 2026 are directly reflected in the implementation of this order.”

The minister also leaves it to the NFA to notify businesses of the trade interruption between Albania and Brazil.

"In view of the above, the NFA shall take all necessary measures to notify business operators importing beef and poultry meat from Brazil of the above changes, the implementation of which shall commence on September 3, 2026."

Since 2006, Brazil has been the world's leading supplier of beef, pork, veal, and chicken, and has also been a major source of meat for the meat processing industry.

If we refer to data from the World Bank's WITS, in 2024 Albania imported $28.5 million in meat and offal from Brazil, of which $10.1 million was meat and poultry.

After this decision, Albania must seek a new meat market that not only offers cheap prices and quantity, but above all guarantees food safety.

The decision to ban meat imports from Brazil comes just a few days after an investigative article by Vox News.
