Sylvester Stallone has spoken about the deep pain he experienced after the loss of his son, Sage, who passed away at the age of 36 from a heart attack.

In an interview with The New York Times, the 80-year-old actor recalled the moment he received the tragic news and how this loss affected him. 

Stallone revealed that, although in the first few days he managed to cope with the obligations and the funeral ceremony, about a week later he faced a strong emotional outburst.

"You go through a lot of stages of guilt. You think: What could I have done? Should I have been there? What if I had done this? What if I had taken the right path instead of the left?" he confessed.

Stallone also recalled the phone call in which he learned of his son's death. According to him, the call was unexpected and cold.

"My mother's new husband, who I had never met and who was a doctor, called me and said, 'Sly, he's gone. Sage's gone.' I said, 'Gone where?' 'He died. Gone. I'm sorry.' And he hung up ," the actor said.

In the first few days after the loss, Stallone thought he was coping. But after he went through the funeral ceremony and tried to get on with his daily life, the pent-up emotions exploded.

"With the funeral, taking care of his mother and trying to move on in the present, it all takes you into a whole different world. You think, 'Wow, I'm doing this. When am I going to explode?' And about a week later, I was all alone in my room and a scream came out of me that I had never heard before or since that day. It was just pain and grief and guilt. It wasn't human," he said.

The actor spoke fondly of his son, describing him as "a very good boy."

"He had a wonderful mother. He could have done great things in the future. I had no idea there was something that you would expect to show up in a much older man. But no, something like that doesn't get over," Stallone said.

Sage Stallone, the son of Sylvester Stallone and his ex-wife Sasha Czack, was found dead in his Los Angeles home on July 13, 2012.

The father-son relationship was also shown on the big screen. Sage played the role of Rocky Balboa Jr., the son of Sylvester Stallone's character, in the film Rocky V.
