Black in the world of football! Alex Manninger has died at the age of 48, after a tragic train accident. The former goalkeeper, also known for his time at Juventus, was hit by a train while in his car, which was dragged for several meters. The fatal accident occurred near Salzburg, Austria. Emergency services arrived almost immediately, but only just confirmed Manninger's death. The incident occurred at around 08:20 in the morning, near the Pabing stop, at an unattended railway crossing.
Manninger was in a Volkswagen car, which was severely damaged. Around 25 passengers on the local train and the driver were unharmed. Rescue teams and volunteer firefighters from Nußdorf arrived at the scene immediately, but there was nothing more that could be done for the former footballer. According to Austrian media, citing police sources, emergency teams pulled him out of the car and immediately gave him first aid. A defibrillator was also used at the scene, but to no avail. The circumstances of the collision are still unclear. Reactions from various football clubs on social media have been immediate. Recently, Manninger gave an interview in which he explained that after retiring in 2017 he had completely left football to return to his previous profession as a carpenter.
Causes unclear, investigation begins
The exact circumstances of the accident are still unclear. For this reason, an expert has been appointed to reconstruct the event. To better understand what happened, electronic data from both Manninger's vehicle and the train will be analyzed. It will also be verified whether the signaling system at the railway crossing functioned properly. Manninger was alone in the vehicle.
According to Austrian media, expert Gerhard Kronreif has been sent to the scene by order of the prosecutor's office. His task will be to accurately reconstruct the sequence of events.
“Thanks to the type of vehicle, it is possible to accurately analyze the electronic data and, consequently, the driver's behavior.” During his career, Manninger has made 33 appearances for the Austrian national team and also participated in the 2008 European Championship.
Manninger's career between Austria, the Premier League and Serie A
