Thomas Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel will be the new coach of the England National Team. The former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager has reached an agreement with the English Football Association and will fly to London this week to complete the deal, to replace Gareth Southgate on the Three Lions bench.

The German, who has been out of a job since leaving Bayern in the summer, will become the third non-English manager to take charge of the England team after Eriksson and Capello.

A press conference to announce his appointment is expected to be held tomorrow at 1.30pm at Wembley Stadium, which will also be attended by FA chief executive Mark Bullingham.

The FA had a long list of names for the new manager that included Pep Guardiola and Eddie Howe, but talks with Tuchel were accelerated and finalized today.

Tuchel has an impressive CV having won league titles with Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, as well as the Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup with Chelsea.

During a short playing career, Tuchel played for Stuttgarter Kickers in the Bundesliga 2 and SSV Ulm in the division below before leaving due to a serious knee injury at the age of 24.

He earned a degree in business administration at the University of Stuttgart while working as a waiter before becoming a youth football coach and, in 2009, being appointed manager of Bundesliga side Mainz at the age of 36.

Tuchel led the team to the Europa League for the first time in its history and earned a reputation as one of German football's "most tactically astute young coaches".

Asked about his preferred style, he told German newspaper Die Zeit that it was "dynamic and defensive up front", while the players were treated "in a certain way and provided a harmonious atmosphere".

After the news broke, many England fans were shocked at the idea that a German would take over the national team, but the FA has made it clear throughout the recruitment process that nationality would not be a barrier to the role.

Before the appointment was confirmed, England captain Harry Kane welcomed the idea of Tuchel taking charge of the national team. Kane, who was coached by the German at Bayern Munich last season, said at a club fan event: "I know Thomas well from last year. Fantastic coach, fantastic person."
