DW: Homage to the football legend at the "Munchener Arena" stadium,
Beckenbauer

President Frank-Walter Steinmeier described Beckenbauer as a "great German" and as "the most favorite ambassador of our country".

Everywhere around the globe, the extraordinary German footballer was known, Steinmeier said: "All over the world, people have revered, adored and loved Franz Beckenbauer. We are parting ways with a wonderful footballer and man."

Beckenbauer's friend and long-time teammate, Uli Hoeness, praised Beckenbauer's extraordinary football skills as well as his human qualities: "Anyone who had a problem, he turned to Franz. This was one of his most important features. He was infinitely generous."

As a "masterpiece", the honorary president of FC Bayern appreciated the fact that Beckenbauer managed to bring the 2006 World Cup to Germany. Hoeness recalled the "summer fairy tale" (as the championship was called at the time), when people all over Germany waved the national flag: "We must achieve this again, we are all proud of our country. But I want to emphasize very clearly that I do not want the AfD to be present in this process."

For the song sung by the famous German tenor Jonas Kaufmann, eleven of Beckenbauer's friends and teammates laid a wreath of red roses in the middle of the stadium.

It included members of the 1974 champion team such as Wolfgang Overath, Günter Netzer and Berti Vogts, national record player Lothar Matthäus and FC Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz-Rummenigge. A picture of the legendary libero with the number 5 was projected in the midfield.

The memorial ceremony was attended by Beckenbauer's family and friends from politics and sports at the Münchener Arena.

The highest state representatives such as President Steinmeier, Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder.

National team coach Julian Nagelsmann, 2014 champion coach Joachim Löw, and German Football Association sporting director Rudi Völler were also among the guests.

FC Bayern's current squad of Manuel Neuer, Harry Kane and Thomas Müller interrupted preparations for Sunday's Bundesliga match against Werder Bremen to attend the ceremony.

President Aleksander Ceferin was present in Munich for the European Football Federation UEFA.

Even tennis legend and Bayern fan Boris Becker commemorated the great Beckenbauer at the ceremony./ DW
