Adidas, the historic sponsor of the German national team, has blocked the online sale of Germany's jersey number 44, because it brings to mind the symbol of the Schutzstaffel, popularly known as the SS, the paramilitary organization of the German National Socialist Party.

The news is announced by 'Bild', which brings the statements of Oliver Brugen, spokesman for the well-known sports brand. He explains that the similarity between the number 4 and the S of 'SS' was absolutely not intentional.

With a post published in 'X', the DFB (German Football Federation) claims that the design of the jerseys was also presented and evaluated by UEFA and that "none of the parties involved had noticed any resemblance to Nazi symbols".

The Federation has assured that "there will be an alternative design for number 4 together with '11teamsports'".

The problem was first raised by the German historian, Michael König, evidencing the proximity of the character of the number 4 to the symbol of the SS. Then the debate broke out in Germany, which also brought the drastic decision to remove the jersey number 44 from the market.

Designed in 1929, the "SS" has become synonymous with some of the worst crimes against humanity committed by the Nazis. Members of the SS were responsible for guarding concentration camps, interrogating "traitors" and running extermination camps such as Auschwitz, where more than a million people were killed.

This year's European Football Championship will take place in Germany, where the matches will take place in 10 different cities. The competition will begin on June 14, when the hosts take on Scotland.
