The President of the Albanian Football Federation, Armand Duka , in a press conference, analyzed the performance of the national team in the last qualifiers, describing them as the most successful in the team's history.
He stated that, despite higher expectations, the team has developed a positive path, highlighting the performances against direct opponents and achieving the objective of second place in the group.
According to him, the match against England was also good, considering the high level of the opponent.
Duka emphasized that the results in the last two qualifying cycles are historic, recalling first place in the group for the European Championship and second place for the World Cup, an unprecedented achievement for Albania.
The focus of his statement was also the future of coach Sylvinho. The head of the Albanian Football Association announced that he had a direct conversation with him after the friendly match against Ukraine, emphasizing that the decision on continuity belongs to the coach himself.
According to Duka, Sylvinho is in a moment of reflection, as the role of coach requires great energy and dealing with constant pressure, including managing a group of players.
He announced that the coach has asked for time to decide on his future, while adding that the Federation is ready to offer him a new contract if he decides to continue. The final decision is expected to be made before the friendly matches in June.
Armando Duka: I knew that this was the main interest and I was thinking whether I should express my opinion or wait for your questions. In fact, we expected more and deserved more with what we gave in Poland. The competition was good, the qualifiers in the group. There were also matches in which they were not up to our expectations. During the qualifiers there was a good performance against the direct opponent, because this was also our objective, to come second in the group. England, an opponent that not only we, but many opponents in Europe have a difficult time with, in Tirana our performance was good.
The qualifiers for me are successful and if I push it a little further to connect it to the coach or the staff, both qualifiers are the best in Albania's history. The qualifiers for the European Championship, first place in the group and the qualifiers for the World Cup, second place in the group, which has never happened before. We definitely wanted, we had a dream to go to the World Cup. We could go from that match, at least try it in Stockholm. Fate did not smile on us.
Starting from this mini-analysis, I spoke with the coach of the national team directly after we returned from that friendly match with Ukraine, where we were all 'injured'. I told him the same things. Our journey was positive. But a coach feels it himself if he really leads a team. The position of coach consumes you. It is known that footballers are not called up and are not happy. Maintaining balance and having power again is felt more by the one who is at the helm. I believe that I have an obligation to be transparent about all things and I am telling him the conversations with the coach. He asked me: 'What do you think?'. In my opinion, I told him that you still have energy. He will take the time to think about this and will give me an answer. If he tells me that he has energy, then we will give him a new contract. But we will decide this before the June friendlies.
