The killing of 4 protesters/ SP: SPAK took over "21 January"

The chairman of the Parliamentary Group of the Socialist Party, Taulant Balla, spoke today about January 21, 2011, the killing of 4 protesters in front of the prime minister's building during the time when Sali Berisha was prime minister.

Balla from Roskoveci has appealed to the General Prosecutor's Office and the Prosecutor's Office of Tirana to pass the file on the murder of Aleks Nikes on January 21 to SPAK.

"Tomorrow we commemorate the 12th anniversary of the boulevard massacre and the killing of the four martyrs of this country in the protest of January 21, 2011. I want to emphasize that the file was in charge of the highest officials of that time, not only the Guard of the Republic, not only the Ministry of the Interior but also to those at the head of the government, the fact is that one of the four martyrs, Alex Nika, whose murder file is an open file. His family members and I have also addressed several times to the General Prosecutor's Office, Tirana Prosecutor's Office, SPAK to request that new elements that have emerged in this file be investigated. The fact is that there was deliberate damage to the evidence during 2011, either from the projectile found in the body of the deceased, but also from other elements, and that in my estimation and my appeal is that on the 12th anniversary of this crime,

He said that the Special Prosecutor's Office had to deal with this issue because the persons involved in what he calls 'state crime' fall under the jurisdiction of SPAK.

"The reason is very simple, the people involved in this state crime that took the lives of 4 citizens and injured dozens, are people who come under the jurisdiction of the Special Prosecutor's Office. January 21 is corruption, so the Albanian citizens came out on the boulevard to oppose the corruption of that time, and in this perspective, I think that the Prosecutor's Office should not sit idly by. I emphasize once again that the file of January 21 in the case of the murder of Aleks Nika should no longer remain in the drawers of the Prosecutor's Office of Tirana, but should be transferred to the Special Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office" - concluded Balla.

What happened on January 21, 2011?

It all started after the scandal with the Meta-Priest video, where there was talk of a concession, and this prompted the organization of a protest against this corruption, as the Socialist Party called it at the time. It was 2:00 p.m., when the protesters crossed the road on foot from "Skenderbej" square to the Prime Minister's Office, after the police had taken measures not to allow any buses further.

The crowd started with calls against the then Prime Minister Sali Berisha, while only a few minutes later, they started throwing stones and hard objects towards the police.

The situation became tense after the protesters tried to enter the prime minister's yard, while the police protected the interior. For a moment, gunshots started to be heard inside the territory of the prime minister's office, and these shots left Hekuran Deda, Ziver Veiz, Faik Myrtaj and Aleks Nikaj dead .

The latter, after preliminary treatment at the Tirana Military Hospital, was sent for further treatment to Turkey, where he died after a few days. The Prime Minister at the time, Berisha, appeared at the press conference, declaring that they wanted to stage a coup, while the opposition stated that the state, through the Guard of the Republic and the State Police, killed four innocent Albanian citizens and drowned one peaceful demonstration, which is a constitutional right of the citizen.

The Socialist Party accused the prime minister and the interior minister of ordering the murders. But Berisha did not stop only with the accusations against the SP, he fiercely attacked the Prosecutor's Office, SHISH and the President of the Republic, who, according to him, wanted to overthrow him by force. The first investigation led to Ndrea Prendin and Agim Llupon as defendants for the incident.

The court assessed that the murders of Ziver Veiz, Faik Myrtaj and Hekuran Dedaj happened due to carelessness and sentenced the former commander of the Guard, Ndrea Prendi to one year in prison, as well as the guard Agim Llupo to 3 years.
