Meeting with Konstantinos Tsiaras and the objectives of the Albanian minister.
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Andis Salla, is making his first official visit to the Greek capital since yesterday, with the main goal, as he explains in his article published today by the newspaper Ta Nea, of strengthening agricultural cooperation between Greece and Albania.
This is the first visit of a minister with this portfolio from Tirana to Athens, at a time when Albanian agriculture is laying the necessary foundations to enter the European common market and at the same time when the Greek side is still processing its lessons from the recent crisis with the agricultural sector at the center.
As the 38-year-old Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of Albania himself emphasizes in "NEA", the main objectives related to his three-day visit (12-14/2) to Athens are: first, increasing the volume of bilateral trade exchanges; second, deepening institutional cooperation for approximation with EU policies and regulations; and third, obtaining expertise through the use of proven practices of Greece during the implementation of the Common Agricultural Policy.
The first day of Andis Salla's three-day mission to Athens included visits to Albanian businesses, meetings with members of the Albanian diaspora, contacts with representatives of the Albanian business community in Greece, and a one-on-one meeting with the Rector of the Agricultural University of Athens.
Today's agenda of contacts begins at 11:00 with a bilateral meeting at the Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food with his Greek counterpart, Konstantinos Tsiaras, and continues at 12:30 with a stop in parliament for talks with the Chairwoman of the Standing Committee on Production and Trade, Fotini Arabatzi. Immediately afterwards, the Albanian Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development will be received at the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs by Deputy Foreign Minister Haris Theoharis, responsible for Economic Diplomacy and Openness issues, and will later visit the Athens Chamber of Commerce of Professionals for a meeting, among others, with the president of the institution, Yannis Hatzitheodosiou.
Against the backdrop of his contacts in the Greek capital and the objectives he wants to achieve, mainly through deepening bilateral cooperation on issues within his portfolio, Andis Salla spoke to "TA NEA" about both Greek-Albanian relations and the common challenges facing the two countries in the context of the climate crisis.
"Albanian-Greek relations must continue to develop in a positive spirit, based on our common strategic interests, our close cooperation within NATO and our European perspective," the Albanian minister emphasized.
“As for common challenges, climate change makes them more frequent and costly: droughts and heat waves, pressure on water resources and irrigation systems, fires, erosion and extreme weather phenomena, as well as the increasing spread of plant and animal diseases and parasites. The geographical proximity and climatic similarities between some Greek and Albanian regions give us an advantage: developing joint and timely solutions for water management, climate-smart agriculture, early warning systems, biosecurity and production adaptation. The goal is clear: protecting farmers' incomes and strengthening the sustainability of agricultural production in both countries,” he emphasizes.
With a clear definition of where Tirana is aiming in terms of planning its agricultural policy with a view to EU membership, Andis Salla concludes his first mission in Athens tomorrow with a working lunch with representatives of the Greek agricultural and agri-business sector.
However, his cooperation with the Greek side will continue, as, as he emphasizes in his article today in "TA NEA", he expects decisive support from Athens for the completion of negotiations with the EU within the predetermined deadlines, with a focus on the three chapters of his portfolio.
