A meeting between the mayor of Himara, Vangjel Tavo, and representatives of the Turkish Maarif Foundation has sparked strong reactions in the local community, opening a new political and identity debate in a traditionally sensitive area.

The meeting, initially presented by Tavo himself as a step towards “improving education” and “expanding opportunities for the youth of the area,” included proposals for opening a vocational school, setting up new laboratories, and creating a language course center, including one in Turkish.

But Tavo's post on social media was met with harsh criticism. Citizens and activists accused the mayor of "bringing Turks into Himara" and of making decisions without consulting the community. The controversy was ignited by the reaction of OMONIA, which accused Tavo of creating a platform for "Turkish state services" in a region where, according to them, such movements endanger coexistence and local identity.

In its statement, OMONIA calls the action a “dangerous initiative,” linking it to recent political developments that led to the removal of elected mayor Fredi Beleri and the installation of Tavo as mayor. According to them, Maarif’s presence in Himara is not an educational issue, but an attempt to control and influence the community.

After the wave of criticism, Tavo closed the comments on his posts and published a lengthy clarification, in Albanian and Greek.

He denied that there is a plan to open a school and presented the meeting as a “routine briefing”, emphasizing that there are no agreements, signatures or concrete decisions. Tavo accused OMONIA of “deliberate politicization” and of inciting divisions at a time when Himara, according to him, needs calm, transparency and development.

The mayor stressed that any initiative related to education in Himara will be considered only after consultation with the community and that the identity, language and traditions of the area are "non-negotiable."

Despite the clarifications, the debate in Himara remains open.

Officially, there are no decisions on new educational projects, but reactions show a deep distrust of the community towards any initiative that is seen as external intervention in an area with a long history of cultural and political tensions. / skyweb.al
