Elisa Spiropali has been appointed as the Speaker of the Assembly of Albania today, after the resignation of Lindita Nikolla.
Amid tensions in the parliament hall, Spiropali received 75 votes in favor, 4 against and the rest abstained, as a large part of the opposition MPs abandoned their chairs to protest in the pulpit.
Spiropali expressed her gratitude for the "appreciation" given to her by the appointment to this post, as the "chief servant" of the Assembly of Albania.
Tensions were not absent even during her first speech as Speaker of the Assembly, where opposition MPs threw letters and water at her and Prime Minister Edi Rama.
