FIGURES AND GRAPHICS/ In 9 years, the average salary increased by 45%, Rama

The average salary in the country has grown quite slowly over the past 9 years.

From 45.5 thousand ALL that was gross in 2014, the first year when INSTAT reports the data, it reached 66 thousand ALL after 9 years in 2022, with an increase not indexed to inflation of 45%.

Indexed with inflation, the real wage increase is only about 25% in 9 years!

On the contrary, it happened with the region, when the average salary increased at a faster pace, reaching an average of 800-900 euros/month gross, with the exception of Kosovo, or about 40% more than in the country.

At the end of 2022, the average salary in the economy reached 66 thousand ALL, or about 580 euros. The salary increase in nominal value was the highest of the last 8 years, with 10.8%, while indexed with inflation, the real increase was much lower around 4.1%, because in 2022, inflation, which measures the change in consumer prices, averaged 6.7%, or the highest since 1998.

Even in 2022, real wage growth was lower than in 2021, when it was 6.4%, down from 4.1 in 2022.

Wages are increased by the market and productivity, but the Prime Minister "promises" 900 euro average salary

But, with one drop of the pencil, Prime Minister Edi Rama has promised that within the next two years, the average salary will reach around 900 euros (around 102 thousand ALL).

"Now we have in my hands a very ambitious but at the same time reasonable plan for a salary increase which aims to enable Albania to rise to the top level of the region within the span of these 2 years, i.e. 2023, 2024. It aims to achieve a target of an average salary of 900 euros", Rama said today during the reading of the government's decisions.

This means that we are in the conditions of a new opportunity, an opportunity that we will use to the maximum for the benefit of people, families, and after the increase of the minimum wage we can go towards the increase of the average wage, in two stages.

We will have an increase soon for a scaled part, we will discuss the details after the approval act which will come within the next 10, 15 days. We will publish the full plan so that everyone knows what will follow. For example, we have said and we will stick to the commitment to increase the salary of doctors and nurses by 7% this year, while specialist doctors were raised by 50,000 ALL. After the 7% increase, we will immediately go to the next increase, which will be significant next year.

For other categories, we will have an immediate increase this year.

Second, today we are in the conditions where we can also tell the pensioners that we will keep the promise to distribute to them the extraordinary tax that we imposed on the large energy exporters, as I said before, but today we not only have the promise of general, but also the specific information that for pensioners, there will be 5,000 lek in their direction along with the pensions they will receive next time", said Rama.

"We are in extraordinary conditions. We will take a step now and a step next year. We will make a historic wage increase. It is a salary increase that is actually different from other salary increases, because it is a reform of the entire salary structure of Albania. So it is the result of reforms, efforts, developments and changes that have taken place and for which many have the right to say that we still have lower wages than others in the region?

Precisely because salaries do not increase at will because there is no prime minister in the world who does not want to increase people's salaries every day.

Wages are increased in proportion to opportunities, to guarantee their payment in a permanent process.

And raising wages out of reach is opening a great pit that sucks everyone in.

As long as wages will not be driven by the economy, any increase by "order" will only risk turning into a boomerang!
