During the visit to Kiev, the Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama and the Montenegrin Prime Minister Dritan Abazovic also met with the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal. During the meeting, Edi Rama stressed that Albania stands by Ukraine in its request to obtain the status of candidate country to become part of the European Union.
"To do everything we can from the first day of this terrible war, we are here to support Ukraine in its bid for EU candidate status. We have come as 3 NATO member countries and we are pleased to see that the 5 member states of the Western Balkans have stood by you and the democratic world and of course this applies to Serbia which has very special relations with Russia and also for Albania and continuing with Montenegro, which is aligned with the alliance to Bosnia and Herzegovina ", said Rama.
During his speech, Prime Minister Rama said that there is also another country in the Western Balkans that has sided with Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian occupation. Rama has demanded that Ukraine recognize Kosovo as an independent state.
"There is another country in the Western Balkans, Kosovo from the first day has lined up next to Ukraine until the end. Ukraine has not yet recognized Kosovo and I said it during the press conference, I also said publicly that you reconsider the recognition of Kosovo as those people deserve it and they really proved something extraordinary because they do not remain hostage to the past to remember how Ukraine behaved when Kosovo was attacked, but stood by what they believed about Ukraine. "It would be good for Ukraine to reconsider and convey the right message on behalf of the new European Community," Rama said.
Among other things, Prime Minister Rama said that Albania will join the countries of the region to build a block of buildings in solidarity, but also to show that Ukraine has friends with facts and not only statements.
"While Albania has donated 1 million euros, it will not solve your problems, but for our budget this was something that shows respect for you. "We want to unite with all the Balkan countries and we want to build a block, each of the countries a building that will be there to remember that Ukraine once had friends and to show solidarity with facts and not just statements."
