Rama: What happened to Veliaj has crossed every limit
Prime Minister Edi Rama

Prime Minister Edi Rama says that the arrest of Erion Veliaj on the orders of SPAK "has crossed every limit".

During his speech at the ceremony for the 105th anniversary of Tirana's declaration as the capital, Rama accused SPAK of imprisoning Veliaj, saying that there is no corruption charge against him.

Rama said that Veliaj has been investigated both personally and as a family member, and added that he suspects that the SPAK investigation is "off the rails" of the Albanian Constitution.

Regarding Veliaj's imprisonment, Rama called it abnormal, since according to him, "there is no flagrante delicto, there is no crime, there is no emergency, there is no social danger."

Excerpt from Rama's statement:

What happened yesterday has crossed every limit, not in relation to the absolute right supported by us, but in relation to the necessary separation of powers and the necessity of giving an elected authority the opportunity to exercise it for the entire time it is being investigated. I do not want to bring an example from all over Europe, but detention is a sui generis phenomenon that we are faced with here.

Having said all this, we have no discussion about continuing the fight against corruption. Today we find ourselves in a situation where we do not have an accusation of corruption and an investigation into corruption. But a person, a man's life, his family's life, has been investigated as a result of an anonymous novel with dozens and dozens of pages, filed in February of last year.

After all, I have the privilege of being the leader of the largest force, and I find it impossible not to say that a lynching takes place and then a beheading takes place three months before the elections. For me, this is not normal, there is no flagrante delicto, there is no crime, there is no emergency, there is no social danger. There is an investigation into the life of the mayor. How much such a thing is on the rails of the Constitution, this is not for me to say, but the suspicions are that it is off the rails of the Constitution. And today, only an idiot can tell us that we control justice, only an impudent person can tell us that we have not given independence to justice.
