Prime Minister Edi Rama convened the Socialist Party Assembly for Tirana this afternoon at a hotel near Tirana Municipality.
The main topic of the meeting was the arrest of the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, who was also one of the leaders of the pink seat's electoral campaign for the capital.
In his speech, Rama described the situation as an attack with a political and electoral background, emphasizing that the Socialist Party must intensify its work to compensate for the damage caused by the recent accusations.
"They are hitting us for electoral reasons. This is a big blow to the SP ," Rama said, adding that he will personally engage in managing the work remotely.
"I will also be mayor. I will meet with all the general directors to guarantee the normal functioning of the institutions ," Rama emphasized.
Regarding the accusations against Veliaj, Rama called them baseless and aimed at public manipulation. " The details released to the public are abusive. The clothes and jewelry were purchased for cultural performances, not for personal use," he declared.
The Prime Minister also raised doubts about the way the issue is being handled, mentioning Nesti Angoni as a person who cannot be alone in this process.
"There is no one in the Republic who can conduct such an investigation for a lifetime, " he said.
Meanwhile, after the meeting at Tirana City Hall, Rama and the leaders of the socialist municipalities moved to the Brigades Palace, where they participated in the ceremony marking the 105th anniversary of Tirana's declaration as the capital.
